Last vacation

Hi friends!
I am Maria del Mar Benavides Barrios, but everyone calls me Mar. I'm 21 years old and I've lived and grown in Cali. I want you to know that I study a bachelor in Social Sciences and Sociology. I'm in my third semester at ICESI University. My favorite thing to do is travel, so let me tell you about my last trip, it was crazy. This story started about 4 years ago, when I decided to start volunteering at the YMCA in Cali. For these last years I learned about so much stuff, but mostly, how to create projects and how to potentiate my skills. Because of that, I recently created my own program, "Entre Generaciones," were, through games and art, we teach about gender, diversity and peace. I actually don't know how to project grew so much, a lot of people liked it and as a coordinator, I needed to find more volunteers to respond to the demand. One day my boss came up to me and said, "Hey! Got some good news, from August 2nd to the 9th the YMCA birthday will be celebrated. We will do an event were volunteers from around the world will unite and talk about what their local YMCA is doing. We will pay for the tickets, food and the hotel. In exchange, we need you to find a sponsor for your project, do you accept?" with no hesitation, I said YES!

I had so many things to do before the trip, but there was no time. First I needed to plan a speech about how to convince other people to believe in my project. Second, I needed to talk with the other volunteers from Colombia. Third, I needed to plan the tickets and the hotel. And finally, I need to plan what I was going to share from my country with the people at the event. After a month of planning and excitement the date finally arrived.

All the way from Bogotá to the London airport was crazy. To begin, I met some very nice people in the plane, then airport police made me do a drug test because, they said, "this is something that all Colombians should do,"  and after 9 hours of traveling, with a lot of stories from the passengers and the fly attendants, I got to the Gatweek airport. My time at the event was lovely, I made some new brazilian friends, tasted British food, liked it, and learned a lot of slang. For example, now I know what "nicked" means. In London, the landscapes were amazing! The Royal Gardens, the Buckingham Palace, and the little little telephone booths, it was all marvelous.

Finally, I found people who were interested in my project, learned a lot about the YMCA's from around the world and learned about the many amazing people out there. I'm really great full for that opportunity because I believe that through travel you can discover yourself.
